Sony Interactive Entertainment has shattered records for its most profitable quarter yet, pulling in a whopping $8.8 billion during the three-month period ended December 31, 2022.
This is a record figure for the PlayStation hardware business during Q3 FY222, with console earnings firing past $3 billion thanks to the PS5‘s ever-growing success. Sony’s gaming business generated revenue of $8.797 billion, with total Games & Network Services revenues growing 23% year-on-year, representing a $1.6 billion increase.
Meanwhile, operating income hit $820 million, which was the best profit for a holiday period by barely eclipsing last year’s then-record of $817. Thanks to the availability of PS5s at retail, Sony’s hardware business spiked by 75%, with Sony shipping 7.1 million consoles during the holiday quarter.
Sony announced last week that the PS5 has now shipped 32 million units worldwide, and previously revealed that the console shortage that has plagued its latest machine is now officially at an end.
